On 20 December 1780, the people of Karvia were authorised to build a sermon room; instead, they decided to take matters into their own hands and build a church. It was a bold decision, as there were only some 50 houses in Karvia at the time. The issue of where to put the new church was resolved by building it right in the middle of the parish. The Church of Karvia is a wooden church built by Salomon Köhlström-Köykkä from Jalasjärvi. The building process started in 1789. The church was completed after ten years, in 1798, and it was inaugurated in 1799. The bell tower next to the church was completed in 1806.
